Chad: 00:06 So we're getting a lot of questions regarding the proper way to live life in ketosis. We have you covered in our midweek mini series called Sunday supps. Every Sunday we have a quick supplemental episode where we answer your questions on all things Keto. So our question today comes from Jen and she asks, what about Diet Soda? Can I still have my diet coke?
Eric: 00:27 That's a good question. You know,
Chad: 00:31 It's actually a popular question.
Eric: 00:32 It's very popular and those that I coach, even through the Keto and fasting, they. I'm always asked about their diet coke. Diet coke seems coke zero now. But as far as what they request and ask of me, it's usually diet coke. Uh, I. So we can talk about Diet Sodas in general, right? It doesn't matter if all of them. Yup. They're either going to contain the aspartame. K. Okay. That's an artificial sweetener.
Eric: 01:02 Aspartame. Sucralose. Okay. So the issue always dates back obviously to if it's, is it a carcinogenic cancer causing? And I've looked at studies and I haven't done a lot with it because I just avoided it if I can, but it's, you know, with rats obviously I think they'd, I think it was bladder cancer or something, so there's always going to be this battle back and forth. But as far as on, I have a lot of biofitters that have their diet coke in the morning or diet mountain dew. Um, I, I sometimes I save, I hate to say this, but sometimes people pick their poison and if, if it gets him through the day, I, I don't know, aspartame, aspartame, k, sucralose, all those are artificial. That can't be good. You can be good. I mean look at, you know, that's why even Splenda, sucralose, obviously they've done tests and I read them.
Eric: 02:03 It can actually raise your reverse t three, which prevents t three from going into the sale to do that, to do its job. Okay. And so you have a thyroid issue. So there's a lot of things you gotta be careful with. And I, I leave it up to him and you know, I, I know they're making a lot of changes in their life and, and I, I, I'll say it's not the best thing to do. I've, you know, and I, I avoided sure I'll have a diet coke once in a while and it just, because I like it, the taste of it and I'll, I'll actually grab one, but I like Zevia anything made with Stevia leaf extract, a natural sweetener or monk fruit, things like that. That's what I go after. But I know I get, I get asked a lot and then they say, hey, Eric said I could drink my diet coke or, my mountain dew.
Eric: 02:51 And just really hard to.
Chad: 02:53 It's a balance.
Eric: 02:54 It's a balance. It's up to the individual and say hey, if you don't. And I, I have one bow freighter that was really strict though, but he, he averaged 11 or 12 diet mountain dew a day. Oh my goodness. Yes. And saying, Hey, I've tested it. Had some people get knocked out of Ketosis with that sweetener. Really? So there is some sweeteners that first thing to do if somebody's getting knocked out and then I have to start going over their macros and the first thing I go to is if they're drinking diet sodas, what sweetener do they have? An asshole fame. Kay has knocked people out of Ketosis and they got off of it and boom, they're right back in keto and they jumped to aspartame. I really believe there's gonna be more sodas out. They're coming with some natural sweeteners and hope.
Eric: 03:44 So I think, and I like Zevia, I switched from diet coke, my wife, she still drinks her diet coke every day and she's not going to change. If your liver is good and you know, you've, you know, milk thistle and a lot of supplements you can take to really detox and cleared out real quick.
Chad: 04:05 Now I'm bringing this one out of left field. So if you don't know, it's fine. If you don't know, but I've heard that some of the artificial sweeteners can actually increase your appetite.
Eric: 04:13 Yes. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. So yeah, and that's something to consider and
Chad: 04:20 you don't want to be hungry when you're fasting.
Eric: 04:25 A lot of people use it to decrease it as something you know, that they're drinking so they're not hungry or thirsty, you know, they're trying to fill a void there. Okay. And I, I know fasting. They do it through fasting and I, I try to avoid it, you know, with that much artificial stuff going in your body through fast because you're doing autophagy, you're really trying to cleanse and regenerate.
Eric: 04:47 So why add a toxin to.
Chad: 04:49 You're trying to declutter really.
Eric: 04:51 It's kind of self defeating a little bit. So through the fast I try to keep them with just with coffee's fine and some other things, but no. Yeah, it's up to you.
Chad: 05:03 So it may or may not knock you out. If it does, that's the first thing you should probably look at. Yes.
Eric: 05:08 But a lot of studies on it. You kind of have to weigh all the studies out and make your decision. Yeah. Basically. Yep.
Chad: 05:16 There's a lot of things to consider. They're not just getting knocked out of Ketosis a lot, lot of things.
Eric: 05:22 But you know, we have so many things to consider with and that's why I like keto so much. Could you get you stay, grass fed, organic and all those things. You really eat clean, you do eat clean, so you eating clean and you really don't want to add any more toxins to you if you, if you don't have to. Yep.
