Today's question comes from Muriel who wants to know if it's really OK to live the ketogenic lifestyle long-term? Eric has actually received this question a few times in the last bit, so he is excited to provide the answer!
The "Fat is bad" refrain is quieting...
How our ancestors have actually been doing keto MUCH longer than any other diet.
The science backs up ketogenic nutrition.
Eric's favorite answer: It's all about that Mito and ATP.
More and more doctors are boarding the keto train.
And how we should all spread the good word of ketogenic living.

Chad: 00:05 So we're getting a lot of questions regarding the proper way to live life in ketosis. We have you covered in our midweek mini series called Sunday Supps. Every Sunday we have a supplemental episode where we answer your questions on all things Keto. And our question today comes from Mariel. Mariel asks, I've been keto for almost three months now and I'm wondering if it's okay to be on ketosis longterm. I'm reading things online and also hearing things in my nutrition class that say otherwise. Dun Dun Dun. This is a, this is actually a great question and you're getting a lot of this on the sidelines of both from a higher and higher education online blogging and talking and, and kind of the blogosphere around nutrition and also from medical, like a mainstream medical so that you're no stranger to this question Eric.
Eric: 00:58 No. Well we're back to, you know, it's we're really having to change a mainstream and keto does that because we've always been in fat is bad, fat is bad. And most medical, you know, uh, the science industry, pharmaceutical, everyone has been on the train of, of fat is bad. And now the keto, train is going pretty strong and it's changing that fat is good for you, so it can be those coming out really strong to try to, to try to stop it because they have to admit they're wrong. And this is the old guard basically that have been with this for, you know, since the sixties, seventies. And it's changing. So the old guard has to say, hey, we were wrong. And it's really difficult for people to admit that their science, which really didn't have any science to back, it was not there. And so they do come out negative on, in those new articles coming out that you've really got to go through them and then you can dissect them and say, wow, they really meant manipulated this here.
Eric: 02:09 So, but anyway, long term, uh, you know, it's, that's up. That's a good question because a keto has been around ancestrally we had to exist with ketosis. Otherwise Chad, you and I would not be here. Uh, the DNA wouldn't have kept producing. So ketosis has always been around. But now we've added, you know, when it came in 40, 50 years ago for epilepsy, uh, as treatment and now we have people that have been 10, 15 years, maybe some more, uh, that ventured off, you know, by themselves on it. But now we have so many. I'm, I'm four years, three, four years, uh, but I know a few there, 10, 15 years, and so we're all kind of testing it a nutritional wise when you, when you do the science and on everything, there's no reason to have any fear to live this long term because it's all about Mitochondria, ATP, energy production and, and, uh, keeping everything functional and healthy yourselves. And I, I can't find a better way to do that. And so that's why I coach it. But yeah, there's going to be a lot of negative things being said about it. Um, but more and more, as you know, Chad, you see it, we see every day you were getting more positive from cardiologists and lipidologists and scientists saying, hey, fats actually good for you.
Chad: 03:46 So just as much pushback as we're getting mainstream in mainstream media, mainstream medical, mainstream education, there's just as many people coming around in those areas saying, no, actually there's a lot of validity to this and we need to take a closer look.
Eric: 04:03 And more and more doctors are coming on board. It's the doctors where it usually, it starts at [inaudible]. You go and get your blood lipids tested. Usually in that usually starts it. Uhoh, you know, you gotta get off the fat, you've got to get off this, you got to, you know, we gotta put you on statins. So more and more doctors are, are, are, are realizing that, uh, the higher numbers, certain numbers ratios mean more than actual numbers show. They're actually paying attention to the ratios.
Chad: 04:33 Yeah. And it's, it's, you know, it's a big deal that the mainstream medical is, is everything. And it's kind of forcing them a little bit to look at cholesterol differently.
Eric: 04:44 It's like I've been at their low carb conferences and I've said it before. I get really encouraged. When out of 300 there was 60 something doctors there in attendance, learning ketosis for their patients and that, that is awesome. I that you know, and allow the quote, and I've said this before, a lot of questions they asked were you were pretty basically a newbie questions. It just exciting. They're over there to learn and so that's. And it's getting bigger and bigger. Yeah.
Chad: 05:20 Well that's great. Thanks for biohacking with us.
Eric: 05:21 You Bet. I hope I answered it, so just tell I'm sorry. Okay. I forgot to Mariel, Mariel, just be part of the team and let's just keep this going and we'll all see how long and how great it is. Okay.
