Today's question comes from Clay, who has been consistently in ketosis for 18 months now (congrats Clay!), but now is experiencing some weight gain. But, is this weight gain always a bad thing?
The secret lies in the exercise...
Muscle weighs more than fat.
Where we tend to notice fat first.
And, Eric's seasonal muscle building program...

Chad: 00:04 So we're getting a lot of questions regarding the proper way to live life in ketosis. We have you covered in our midweek mini series called Sunday supps. Every Sunday we have a quick supplemental episode where we answer your questions on all things keto. So our question today comes from clay and he asks, I've been listening to your podcast and had a question for you guys. I've been doing Keto for over 18 months now and I've been doing everything right. I've maintained or lost weight, keeping my net carbs down to 20 a day. All of a sudden I'm gaining weight. I'm wondering what can, what that can be. I am moving a lot and exercising more. Am I just gaining more muscle. I've also been eating a lot more meat as well.
Chad: 00:45 So he's asking, obviously it's just wondering what's going on with weight gain. Um, he doesn't, we don't have any information from clay about whether or not he's happy about the way you feels or his, the way he looks. Uh, so can you talk about this? Have you experienced this? It seems to make sense to me that he might be, uh, you know, gaining muscle weight.
Eric: 01:07 Yes. Yeah. And in clay you're obviously experienced at Kito cause you've been a year and a half, um, and you're keeping your carbs down your net carbs down to 20, which is great. So you're obviously in Ketosis and you're not definitely, you can't be gaining any fat basically. Um, I don't know what your total intake is for the day, but uh, I'm, I'm sure you know, um, basically what you're doing. And so basically, yeah. And obviously you are working out and you are adding some more protein to your, your daily Macros. So it, it's gotta be more muscle. Uh, even this winter I started working out and doing some different uh, throw downs that I like and I actually picked up like seven pounds and it's just like yourself at all outside of what, what, what? And then you just notice your clothes are getting tighter or your, your sleeves on your arm or your whatever. So you are gaining some muscle and obviously you would know if your gain some weight cause it probably be around the belly area. I would, I don't know where you accrue your fat the first place but mine's right in the obliques and the stomach. So I would know if I'm gaining some fat. But uh, yeah, I'm sure you're gaining muscle on and that's a good thing. So you should be happy with that.
Chad: 02:31 Yeah. Yeah. If that's your goal, that's your goal. Like if it's not, you better stop working out and as much.
Eric: 02:38 It's actually not my goal right now. That's funny you said that because even my wife's like why are you gaining muscle right now? Because usually in the winter I drop everything to cut up to get lighter for, for race season obviously. And I'm like, well, but I'm doing some self experimentation again and now I'm packing on muscle and I'm like, oh I'm only gonna f you know, Time's running short so I'm going to have to drop that muscle that I worked pretty hard at putting, putting on it. Just an experiment I was doing to see if I could gain some muscle mass, and it worked, and obviously I went up like almost eight pounds. So it's muscle, it's muscle.
